H. Pylori

Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that has lived alongside humans for thousands of years. In fact, many people carry it without ever knowing it is there. Like many microbes, it is not always a villain. Sometimes it is simply part of the ecosystem. It is just that when it decide sto get a tad ‘loud’ that it becomes an issue.

H. pylori is best known for its ability to live within the stomach lining, an environment that most bacteria would find far too acidic to survive.  If you have ever had acid reflux, heartburn, or vomited, you have likely felt that raw, burning sensation in your chest and throat. That is the stomach acid actively irritating tissues that aren’t designed to handle it. In some individuals, it may contribute to gastritis, stomach ulcers, reflux symptoms, nausea, bloating, and digestive discomfort. It can also influence the production of stomach acid and affect the absorption of nutrients such as iron, vitamin B12, zinc, and magnesium. This is one reason why some people can be eating a nutrient-rich diet and still struggle with deficiencies, fatigue, or poor digestive function.

H. pylori does not wake up one morning and decide to make your life miserable. As it depends on the terrain (environment) in which it lives. Why is it causing symptoms in one person but not another? How is stress affecting stomach function? Is the microbiome thriving or struggling? What roles are diet, inflammation, medication use, and nervous system regulation playing? These are important questions to ask. As with much of health, the question is rarely just, ‘what bug do you have?’ And get that treated, but rather, ‘what is the story behind H. pylori becoming rather loud?’

Understanding H. pylori is rarely about a single bacterium, but about the wider ecosystem in which it lives. And if you are taking acid blockers, such as Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), H. pylori can become a tad too loud and proud over time, as the stomach environment changes around it.
