Seriously? You can tell all that from a poop sample?

Updated: Jan 11, 2023

It seems quite trendy the topic of the microbiome but it is of no surprise.

Here is a list of some of the information a nutritional therapist can gather from a comprehensive stool test;

  • indications of any chronic infection

  • indications the heath of the mucosal lining (very important part of our innate immune system

  • indication of PANDAS/PANS

  • indication of other potential auto-immune conditions

  • indications of SIBO

  • indications of IBS root causes

  • stomach acidity

  • pancreatic sufficiency

  • indications of stress

  • indications of enhanced intestinal permeability (aka ‘leaky gut’)

  • indication of which probiotic if any would be more suitable

  • indications of metabolic disease such as diabetes type 2, cardiovascular disease, celiacs

  • potential bile health and gall bladder issues

That is a lot of information from a simple ‘poop’ sample, right?

Clients request a ‘poop test’ to find out which probiotics would be more beneficial for their health and well being, and how they can be nourishing this amazing fauna of microbes in order to not only improve their wellbeing but reduce inflammation, IBS like symptoms, asthma, hay fever etc.

Collecting and sending off the sample is easy, analysing and interpreting the results is where a qualified nutritional therapist has to get out the elbow grease and do some pattern searching and connecting. The outcome from implementing the suggestions/recommendations from a stool sample test has seen people clear IBS, SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth), asthma, joint pain, eczema, improve thyroid symptoms especially in relation to Hashimoto’s, to name a few.

The human microbiome, is not the only place where the party is at, but the gut barrier health is just as important, as this impacts the immune system and unto two thirds of our immune system resides in the gut!

Avoiding antibiotics

Although we know antibiotics are not great and can lead to antibiotic resistance, the more serious concern is depletion of the microbiome population and it’s diversity, especially if the key players are wiped such as Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Akkermensia species.

How to avoid antibiotics

Our homeopathy module will teach you how to use homeopathy for rapid relief. Imagine you come down with a sinus infection, instead of getting a prescription for antibiotics and then later having to build up the gut health, taking a homeopathic remedy will not only clear the sinusitis but enhances the vitality of the body and does not upset the microbiome within, if anything it may just do the opposite. Win, win situation.

And it is even more exciting as this blog is being typed, we have learned that there is some exciting research coming out from Scientists from the Institut Pasteur “that a direct dialog occurs between the gut microbiota and the brain, a discovery that could lead to new therapeutic approaches for tackling metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity.”
